Apple update disables unlocked iPhones

ImageIt wasn't just a rumor. Apple warned customers early this week that unlocked iPhones may become inoperable. “Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed,” the company said in a statement. Wow, there are going to be a lot of unhappy campers out there (assuming that someone who unlocks their iPhone cares about Apple's software updates).

iPhone debacle
written by JDBLACK, October 05, 2007

I can understand why Jobs wants to keep his software protected. It's really no surprise. But, in the long run, I think keeping the iPhone locked down and limited to only one carrier will hurt its commercial success. The clones are already on the market and Verizon already has a "me, too" version. So, instead of dominating the market, the iPhone is driving the design of technology, but not capitalizing on the profitability. Steve has miscalculated again. For a guy with so much vision, it's amazing how many mistakes he makes.
