I'm curious what people here think is important in a President (since we are going into an election cycle).  I'm sure I didn't list all the important qualifications, but I tried to hit the high points.  And some of these overlap as well.  What I really want to know are 1.  What's your most important issue and 2.  What's your ranking of the importance of all these issues.

My own personal ranking matches how I listen them, so I value fiscal policies the most, for instance, and character least.

I would say fiscal policies trump all, at the moment.  George W. Bush's administration has seen an exponential growth in our deficit, unbalanced budgets, a war we can't afford (for financial and human resource reasons), a plummeting dollar value, not to mention a Federal Reserve (a private bank) that has a dangerous amount of power over our financial policies.  If we continue on this path, my children will inherit a bankrupt country.

JD,

That is a hard one for me, especially in this election thus far. I will probably resort to voting the issues rather than the person, although there are people who might hit my issues, but don’t particularly rank well with me personally. I don’t have an answer.

I would vote for Lou Dobbs if he would run!

I think maybe my post wasn't clear.  I'm asking about the issues, not the people running for office.  Almost all candidates state their positions/beliefs about these issues.  I'm just curious about which issues are most important to people.  I don't think the media does a good job of focusing on the most important issues.  They focus too much on the issues that are most likely to cause people to watch the news.

"Presidency" is a moot point for me (Australia is a constitutional monarchy, not a republic - though that may change in the next 10 years, though probably not the US method for appointing a hea-of-state), but without a strong character or integrity as  sound basis for policy, the rest will be weak and unreliable.
